Why Diversity in your Network Matters

Posted by Omaily Lucas on

They say that our friends are a reflection of our character.

So, take a good look at the people in your network.

  • What does your network say about you?
  • Do your friends broaden your thoughts?
  • Do they challenge your ideas?
  • Do they open your eyes to new values?

Diversity in your network matters if you want to learn more, be more, achieve more. Be a better person.

Diversity is a word we often throw around but know little of the actual meaning of it.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, diversity means:

“The condition of having or being composed of differing elements. The inclusion of different types of people (such as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization.”

This means that when we talk about diversity in your network, we mean having a spider web of people with different characteristics and coming from different walks of life.

People from different races, from different cultures, people with different abilities, and other life’s views.

Now, as humans, we connect with the ones who have a similar story to us.

It’s a simple human nature that we can’t control or evade.

However, make the effort to open up yourself to new experiences and new connections outside your comfort zone.

 ...because you’ll learn something new

Knowledge is power!

But, as people, we can only know so much.

We haven’t been everywhere or seen everything, so it’s the people around us who can fill in the blanks.

Having diversity in your network will expand your knowledge by the simple act of listening to someone who experiences life different from you.
There’s great power in combining thoughts.
Imagine how powerful your mind becomes when it’s filled with more facts, information, and different experiences.

...because it makes you more tolerant

In the world that we live in today, no trait is more valuable than being tolerant.

Tolerance is the first step towards peace between countries, neighbors, families, colleagues, and political parties.

The diversity in your network will make you understand why people act the way they do.

It makes you look at other beyond stereotypes and instead value people for who they are.

...because it makes you see life from a different perspective

Perspective is everything in life.

The life we lead, our values, and norms are often dictators of our perception of life.

It’s how we judge people or situations—whether positive or negative.

Here’s the thing though, what may be different to you, might be completely standard for someone else.

Having diversity in your network is what will expose you to different ways of living life, of different ways of experiencing life, and different ways of viewing life.

Diversity in your network enriches your life. It fuels your thoughts, your creativity, and makes you grow as a person.

If you want to become a better person in life who is tolerant, smart, kind, and respectful than learn to expand and diversify your network beyond your comfort zone.
